Dr. Schuyler S. Korban, a University of Illinois professor with more than 25 years of international experience, has been named Director, International Affairs, ACES Global Connect in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES). The appointment became effective August 16, 2009, pending Board of Trustees approval. Dr. Korban is currently Professor of Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences and in the Division of Nutritional Sciences. He was awarded a B.S. degree in Biology/Chemistry and a M.S. degree in Plant Physiology by American University of Beirut, and a Ph.D. in Plant Genetics by the University of Nebraska. His first association with the University of Illinois was in 1981 as a postdoctoral research associate, followed by promotion through the ranks to Professor in 1995. “I look forward to working with Dr. Korban to build strong and sustainable international programs, and to build additional research and outreach support for international scholarly activities,” said Dr. Robert Hauser, Interim Dean of the College of ACES. Professor Korban has served on various international committees throughout his career. He has traveled around the globe to present seminars and workshops, lead collaborative research projects, and participated in research discussions and exchanges. He holds a career total of 14 patents and patent disclosures, and has published 16 book chapters, 145 refereed publications, and 50 other research publications. He currently serves on editorial boards of several international scientific journals, as Editor-in-Chief or as an Associate Editor. A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fulbright Scholar, and a Guggenheim Fellow are among the many recognitions and awards he has received. “It is my intent to bring international activities to the forefront of all that we do as a college, and to facilitate efforts across the college to enhance those international collaborations,” said Dr. Korban.
